1. Our Commitment to Safety
At AstraLearners, we believe that every child has the right to learn in an environment free from harm, abuse, or exploitation. While our platform is a digital resource, our commitment to safeguarding is absolute. We follow the core principle that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and we have designed our platform to minimize risk by default.
2. Safeguarding by Design (Risk Prevention)
We have intentionally removed the features that most often lead to safeguarding risks on educational platforms:
Zero Peer-to-Peer Interaction: AstraLearners has no chat rooms, private messaging, or comment sections. This eliminates the risk of peer-on-peer abuse, grooming, or bullying on our platform.
Anonymity as a Shield: We mandate the use of generated display names (e.g., "GalaxyExplorer12"). No child is ever identifiable by their real name, location, or image to any other user on the platform.
No User-Generated Content Sharing: Children cannot share their work, photos, or videos with other children on the platform. Their "Vault" is a private silo accessible only to them and their verified Parent/Guardian.
3. Our Professional Duty of Care
Although we operate a "Zero-Access" privacy model for the protection of your data, we recognize our professional obligations under UK law:
Reporting Suspicions: If, through technical support, parent communication, or any other interaction, AstraLearners staff become aware of information suggesting a child is at risk of significant harm, we have a legal and ethical duty to report this to the relevant authorities (such as the NSPCC or local Children’s Social Care).
Illegal Content: We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for illegal content. While we do not proactively monitor private files, if we become aware of any content that breaches UK child protection laws, we will secure the data and notify law enforcement immediately.
4. Safer Staffing
AstraLearners is a family-run organization. Any future employees, contractors, or moderators who have access to sensitive user data or platform management will undergo thorough vetting, including:
Identity Checks: Verification of right to work and identity.
DBS Checks: Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for any roles that involve working with children or their data.
5. Content Safety & Virtual Labs
We curate our 8,000+ lessons to ensure they are age-appropriate and educationally sound.
Virtual Experiment Safety: Our "Interactive Labs" are designed to be safe, simulated environments. We explicitly include safety warnings within these modules to remind children that virtual experiments must not be replicated in the real world without adult supervision and proper safety equipment.
External Links: We use reputable sources (like Oak National Academy). While we vet these sources, we encourage parents to monitor children if they click through to external educational videos.
6. The Role of Parents (Our Safeguarding Partners)
AstraLearners is a tool for home-educating families. We empower parents to act as the primary "Designated Safeguarding Lead" for their children:
Supervision: We expect parents to supervise their child’s online activity and ensure the content uploaded to their child’s logs is appropriate.
Accountability: Parents are responsible for the security of the family account. Login details should never be shared with anyone outside the immediate family unit.
7. How to Raise a Safeguarding Concern
If you have concerns about the safety of a child using our platform, or if you encounter a technical bug that you believe compromises child safety:
Dedicated Lead: Contact our Safeguarding Lead immediately at safeguarding@astralearners.com. We prioritize these emails and aim for a response within 4 hours during business hours.
Whistleblowing: We encourage any user to report concerns regarding the conduct of our platform or its representatives.
Immediate Danger: If you believe a child is in immediate danger of harm in the real world, you should contact the Police (999) or the NSPCC Whistleblowing Advice Line immediately.
